These records relate to investigations carried out following the collapse, in 1975 and 1986, of Binishells at Fairvale and Pittwater High Schools. Binishells were concrete dome structures developed by Dante Bini which were adopted by the Department of Public Works for use as multi-function spaces at schools. The major advantages of the system were speed in construction, significant savings in labour and materials, and minimal disruption to school activities.The records include a collection of slides, taken between 1974 and 1978, on the construction of Binishells, and photographs of the site of the collapsed dome at Pittwater High in 1986 and the condition of domes at Peakhurst, Ashbury and Ingleburn in 1987; a chart showing the monitoring and maintenance program for Binishells and plans of the reinforcement system for the shells and of the pumping system; a 16mm film of the construction of Binishells produced by the Public Works Department; and a number of reports, including one by Ove Arup and others into the materials and failure of the Pittwater High shell and the condition of the remaining domes.
