Angel with candlestick

Cast of Angel with candelabra sculpted by Michelangelo Buoarroti. The original is situated in Bologna at the Church of St. Domenico.  The subject had to represent a winged angel, kneeling and with a candlestick on the raised knee, in which to place votive candles on the sides of the actual sarcophagus. Michelangelo sculpted a solid and compact figure, full of potential energy, which moves decisively away from the balanced and refined forms, typical of the early Renaissance, which Niccolò had used for the other candlestick, with the appearance of a gentle and melancholy girl. Michelangelo's massive and masculine angel seems to want to lean forward, creating a large and dynamic drapery in his garment, anything but ethereal and rhythmically undulating; his strength, already in the sixteenth century, is retained within an ideal cubic spatial form.

米开朗基罗·博纳罗蒂（Michelangelo Buonarroti）所塑持烛台天使的铸品。其原作现藏于博洛尼亚的圣多明我教堂。该作品的主题为带翼天使，单膝跪地，将烛台架于抬起的膝头，可于其上放置还愿蜡烛，整体设于石棺两侧。米开朗基罗塑造的天使形象坚实紧凑，充满内在势能，果断脱离了早期文艺复兴典型的均衡雅致风格；尼科洛曾以这类风格创作另一座天使烛台，其形象是温柔忧郁的少女。米开朗基罗笔下厚重且充满阳刚之气的天使仿佛正欲前倾，衣袍褶饰极具动感，绝非空灵飘逸、韵律起伏的风格；早在16世纪，其力量感便被收纳于理想的立方体空间框架之中。
