This research is part of the study titled "The Vulnerabilities of Global Value Chains in Industrial Cities: A Comparative Study and Roadmap Proposal for the Cases of Gebze and the Setúbal Peninsula," supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK). The aim of the study is to comparatively examine the economic, social, and environmental structures of the Setúbal industrial region in Portugal, dominated by the Volkswagen Autoeuropa factory, and the Gebze region in Istanbul, where the automotive and metallurgical industries are significant. Particularly in the context of discussing the vulnerabilities of global value chains concerning issues such as the pandemic and earthquakes, this research aims to contribute to the literature by investigating the spatial impacts of these chains. Both regions are analyzed based on their dependency on multinational corporate investments and their positions within global value chains.
For this purpose, the sectoral characteristics of the Portuguese and Turkish economies are analyzed, the international attractiveness of the two industrial regions is assessed, and references are made to urbanization and social dynamics. In this context, the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods is targeted. The research has been conducted with workers in both countries who are part of global value chains in the automotive and metallurgical sectors and are covered by collective bargaining agreements. Workers' living conditions, income status, housing and environmental issues, and climate change awareness are being comparatively analyzed, and the results are being used in the analysis for both regions.
The database for this study, which contains the survey results from Setúbal Peninsula in Portugal, was created using the envelope method, based on the organizational structure of Fiequimetal/CGTP-IN, with permission from the union for this purpose. The envelope method involved delivering the survey form to the selected participants in an envelope and then collecting the completed forms.
