Portrait of the Sophocles

Sophocles (circa 498-406 BC) is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. He wrote over 120 plays during the course of his life, but only seven have survived in a complete form: Ajax, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus. This is a Roman copy from the 1st century BC of a Greek original from the 4th century BC.索福克勒斯（Sophocles，约公元前498年—公元前406年）是三位留有完整传世剧作的古希腊悲剧剧作家之一。他一生创作了逾120部戏剧，仅存7部完整传世之作：《埃阿斯》（Ajax）、《安提戈涅》（Antigone）、《特拉基斯妇女》（The Women of Trachis）、《俄狄浦斯王》（Oedipus Rex）、《厄勒克特拉》（Electra）、《菲罗克忒忒斯》（Philoctetes）以及《俄狄浦斯在科罗诺斯》（Oedipus at Colonus）。此件作品为公元前1世纪的罗马复制品，其原型为公元前4世纪的希腊原作。
