Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) is the first unit in China to carry out research on high-power laser systems and their applications. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the construction of SIOM, a brief review of the series of high-power laser facilities built in SIOM and related technology development are presented. The performance and technological progress of the ShenGuang II multifunctional comprehensive experimental platform currently in operation are introduced, and some important landmark physical experimental results have been achieved using this platform. Finally, the basic problems and trends of the future development of peak-power laser technology and engineering are prospected.
