We propose to monitor 1ES 2344+514 over seven months with the goal of better understanding its intermittent extreme behaviour. 1ES 2344+514 is a nearby (z=0.044) high energy peaked BL Lac. So far clear extreme behaviour of the source has been observed only in high states. During an X-ray flare in 1996 a shift of the synchrotron peak to frequencies above 3*10**18 Hz was reported. A similarly extreme behaviour was not found in subsequent MWL campaigns during low states thus suggesting the extreme behaviour being a feature of high states. Still the small number of published MWL observations does not allow for a coherent picture of the complex spectral behaviour of 1ES 2344+514. [truncated! Please see actual data for full text]
