Anti-microbial resistance is the non-responsive nature of micro-organisms to medicine tailor-made to eliminate them. It makes infections harder to treat thus increasing the risk of severe illness of the patient, spread of the disease and even death. This impacts even the once treatable infections, rendering them fatal.
To make headway, there is the aspect of anti-microbial stewardship, leading the way in making sure anti-microbial resistance is curbed. The roadmap to achieve this is guided by reliable data which tracks how resistance is spreading, the drugs becoming less effective and their distribution. This aids in guiding treatment decisions, brought forth by the understanding that there is a hierarchy to drug use- Access, Watch and Reserve drugs.
The goal of this research is to scientifically analyze and interpret the data which eventually leads to a deeper understanding of anti-microbial resistance. Being in line to improve diagnostics and promote rational drug use, that is, avoiding misuse and abuse of medicine simply because of negligence both by the patient and the medical practitioner. The regiment curved out from the proposed research would go a long way in medical practitioners being able to treat patients better, and for the patients treated to respond accordingly.
Promotion of new public health policies would also be encouraged for the health sector. This is by coming up with wiser strategies derived from the research on how to protect the public from certain infections. This would then inform social education to promote the changes. Revamping of the anti-microbial drugs to combat the mutative nature of these micro-organisms and phase out the ineffective ones is also set to be achieve after analysis of these datasets.
In a nutshell, the research would not only help mitigate the spread of anti-microbial resistance but also contribute specialized solutions on tackling it.
