A case of mass occurrence of Sandalodesmus Araujoi (Schubart, 1946) in a municipality of São Paulo, Brazil and description of the heretofore unknown female (Polydesmida, Chelodesmidae)

Our study describes the first identification of the female of Sandalodesmus araujoi and highlights the importance of female genital characters in species classification. It also reports a case of mass occurrence in the Chelodesmidae family. Female genital morphology showed significant differences between the studied species, suggesting its utility in distinguishing genera. Mass occurrences of millipedes are unpredictable and may be related to environmental variations and human modifications of natural habitats. The intense urbanization in the region where the species was found may have influenced its population dynamics.
