In October 2018, subtidal and intertidal sediment samples were collected across the inner and outer Saint John Harbour and analyzed for microplastics by two University of New Brunswick researchers, Krista Beardy and Dr. Heather Hunt. The subtidal samples were collected using a 0.1〖 m〗^2 Smith McIntyre grab (SMG) sampler, while the intertidal samples were collected using a metal, paint-free trowel. Lab analysis was conducted as per the protocols developed by Krista Beardy and involved two extractions of microplastics; the first extraction used a 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution and the second extraction used a concentrated zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Atlantic Ecosystems Initiatives program provided funding to support this work; COINAtlantic (coinatlantic.ca) collaborated with research partners to make data publicly available under the FAIR data guiding principles.
