Definition: The Gini coefficient is a measure of relative concentration or inequality, here in terms of per capita assets, and can assume a value between zero (equal distribution) and one (maximum concentration). It is based on the Lorenz curve, which — for example in the case of a distribution of assets — from the poorest households represents the accumulated shares in the number of households in relation to the total share of their total assets. With an absolutely even distribution of assets, the Lorenz curve would result in a straight up with 45 degrees (line of perfect equal distribution). The deviation of the actual curve from this ideal line is measured by the Gini coefficient. In the case of equal distribution, there is a value of zero for the Gini coefficient and, in the case of concentration of the total assets on only one person, a value of 1. An increase in the Gini coefficient thus means an increase in the U.S.
