Influence of the R atom on the microscopic magnetic properties in RCo5 compounds (R = Y, Sm, Dy, Gd, and Lu)

This proposal is focused on the study the microscopic origin of magnetic properties of RCo5 intermetallics, with R=Y, Sm, Gd, Dy and Lu. Element selective field-dependent XMCD will be used to locally probe the magnetic response at the specific R and Co sites. For this, XMCD spectra at the L2,3-edges of R and K-edge of Co will be collected at room temperature with magnetic field applied along the easy and hard magnetization directions. A convenient choice of a set of single crystals will allow us to understand the influence of the large magnetic moments of R atoms on the magnetic properties.
