WWF Watershed Report Newfoundland and Labrador

Canadians deserve to know the state of their country’s watersheds. Unfortunately, however, Canada does not have an easily accessible, national system for reporting the health of freshwater ecosystems across the country and the threats they face. WWF has been working to address this issue. First, we developed an assessment framework in consultation with leading freshwater scientists. Next, we used that framework to begin producing reports on the health and threats to Canadian rivers. To date, we have assessed all of Canada’s 25 major watersheds. This website — watershedreports.wwf.ca — presents our results in an interactive format designed to engage Canadians and raise awareness about the watershed they live in. We have completed a national re-assessment in 2020, following up on our recommendations from 2017. However, we must continue to take action on the threats facing Canada’s watersheds. This site presents the results of WWF’s Watershed Reports: a multi-year project intended to assess the health of Canada’s watersheds and the threats they face. To date, we have assessed half of Canada’s major watersheds. We will finalize the first-ever nationwide assessment by 2017. Helpful facts for exploring the site: Canada is divided into 25 major watersheds. Each major watershed is made up of one or more sub-watersheds — some have over twenty! Learn more about how watersheds work. WWF’s Watershed Reports are based on four key indicators of river health and seven key threats. Results on the site are available for both overall health and overall threats, but also for each of the individual indicators. Learn more about these indicators and why they’re important. Results from WWF’s Watershed Reports can also be explored at many geographic scales: National level: We provide a Canada-wide summary of the health and threat results for the watersheds assessed to date. Watershed level: Each watershed assessed so far has a dedicated page describing the watershed and explaining the results. Sub-watershed level: These results can be explored from the watershed pages. Site level: Local results based on specific data used to assess water quality and bugs can be explored throughout the country.
