YbOI2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Yb is bonded in a distorted water-like geometry to two equivalent O and three equivalent I atoms. There are one shorter (2.20 Å) and one longer (2.21 Å) Yb–O bond lengths. All Yb–I bond lengths are 3.33 Å. O is bonded in a distorted trigonal planar geometry to two equivalent Yb and one I atom. The O–I bond length is 2.06 Å. There are two inequivalent I sites. In the first I site, I is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one O atom. In the second I site, I is bonded in a distorted T-shaped geometry to three equivalent Yb atoms.
