Progress on neuroprotective effects and mechanisms of sesquiterpene lactones

Sesquiterpene lactones are a diverse class of natural compounds predominantly found in the asteraceae family, with extensive sources in traditional herbal medicines. These compounds are characterized by three isoprene units and have been recognized for their wide range of biological activities, including antitumor, antiviral, antibacterial, and antidiabetic properties. Recent cellular and animal studies have increasingly highlighted the neuroprotective effects of sesquiterpene lactones. This review aims to summarize and critically evaluate the latest advancements in the neuroprotective mechanisms of SLs, providing valuable insights for the further research and development of SLs-based therapeutic agents.
