Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis (SE) is commonly characterized by phage typing (PT) and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). However, these methodologies do not provide sufficient discriminatory power among strains of SE, one of the most clonal serotypes. Highly discriminative typing methods are needed for outbreak and surveillance investigations. To find alternate ways of typing, this study aimed to compare multi locus variable tandem repeat analysis (MLVA), whole genome single nucleotide polymorphism (WG SNP) analysis and PFGE using epidemiologically defined clusters of clinical cases and related food sources of SE. A set of 46 isolates (23 PT8, 10 PT13a, 8 PT13, 2 PT5b, 1 PT19, 1 PT1 and 1 untypable -UNT-) were sequenced by Illumina technology, including 6 groups epidemiologically related.
