To collect this data, an Internet-wide IP address sweep was conducted. Every IP address in the ranges allocated by IANA was pinged once by sending ICMP ECHO_REQUEST (PING) packet. If the response (ICMP_ECHO_REPLY) came, its IP address was recorded in this data-set. In all, over 2.5 billion distinct IP addresses were probed during this experiment.为采集本数据集，研究人员开展了一次全互联网范围的IP地址扫描实验。实验针对互联网编号分配机构（IANA，Internet Assigned Numbers Authority）分配的所有IP地址段，向每个IP地址发送一次ICMP回声请求（ICMP ECHO_REQUEST，即PING）数据包。若收到对应的ICMP回声应答（ICMP_ECHO_REPLY），则将该IP地址纳入本数据集。本次实验共探测了超过25亿个独立IP地址。
