INPN — Data from the ‘Protected Spaces’ program
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a protected space is “a geographical area clearly defined, recognised, dedicated and managed, by any effective legal or other means, in order to ensure the long-term conservation of nature, ecosystem services and associated cultural values”. The designation of protected natural areas is a major component of natural heritage protection and management strategies. As such, there are various protection tools in France, the diversity of which reflects the multiplicity of actors, objectives and types of management.
