The COPUS observation protocol was developed to measure student and instructor behaviors within STEM classrooms. Observers mark the presence of a behavior occurring during every 2-minute interval and observers often observe for an entire class session. COPUS consists of 13 coded student behaviors and 12 coded instructor behaviors, which are often collapsed into more general categories. The presence of LAs in the classroom necessitated that we modify these original COPUS coded behaviors so that we could differentiate between LAs, instructors, and students. We therefore added 12 LAs codes that closely resembled common instructor (presenting, guiding, administrative, and other) or student (receiving) behaviors. LA-supported STEM courses in this dataset were originally sampled to support various sub-questions on a broader project which approved by the institutional review boards at three institutions (UCD IRB 14-0028; NDSU IRB SM151257; FIU IRB 15-0175). Instructors, students, and Learning Assistants received information about the study from the project and were able to opt out of the research through and “opt-out” form. All COPUS data have been de-identified to remove identifiers related to institution, course, and instructor.
