Identification of fishermen friendly production strategies for aquaculture of sea scallops Final Progress Report

Grant no. NA66FK0080 This Final Progress Report is presented in three sections. The first section reviews aspects of hatchery-based effort completed in 1996 -1997 at Mook Sea Farm and includes the following: 1. Broodstock Sourcing 2. Broodstock Conditioning 3. Spawning 4. Larval Rearing 5. Larval Settlement 6. Limited Nursery Activity 7. Winter-over and Limited Growout Activity In the second section, the results of efforts by Richard Taylor, a fisherman based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, are presented. He reviewed opportunities and limitations for sea scallop aquaculture in both nearshore and offshore waters in traditional fishing grounds. The results of surveys and interviews conducted by Ken Riaf, a fisherman and attorney in Gloucester, are presented in the third section. Local businessmen, fishermen, community leaders, and government and regulatory agency officials, were asked to comment on obstacles to and support for, development of sea scallop aquaculture within traditional fishing areas.
