MSM supplementation and exercise-induced muscle inflammation

Skeletal muscle experiences inflammation and oxidative damage following strenuous bouts of exercise. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is supplemented to horses as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. The direct effect of MSM supplementation on skeletal muscle following exercise-induced damage is not well researched. The purpose of the experiment was to determine if MSM modifies inflammatory and oxidant gene expression in skeletal muscle following exercise.
