With the construction of settlements and transport routes as well as the intensification of agriculture, the area of river waters has been increasingly narrowed over the past decades. Extensive structural measures changed the natural course of the streams to protect infrastructure and agricultural crops from flood damage. In many places, these installations affect the ecological functioning of the waters. In order for a water to function as a habitat, it requires not only good water quality, but also natural morphological and hydrological conditions. The first data collection took place between 1997 and 1999. In 2005, a partial revision of about 500 km was made. Between 2009 and 2012, a new survey was carried out in the field for around 1 500 km. For the remaining approximately 2 200 km, the data from the initial survey were transferred to the current water network. As part of the conversion of the water network to official survey data in 2014, the ecomorphology data were also transferred to the official survey data. As of 2015, the data will be continuously tracked. In 2019, in addition to the river waters, the lake shores with respect to ecomorphology were also collected and assessed.
