German Internet Panel, Wave 5 (May 2013)

The German Internet Panel (GIP) is an infrastructure project. The GIP serves to collect data about individual attitudes and preferences which are relevant for political and economic decision-making processes. Experimental variations in the instruments were used. The questionnaire contains numerous randomizations as well as a cross-questionnaire experiment. Topics: Public debt: Preferred measures against new public debt as well as assumed positions of the parties CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and Die Linke on the basis of selection pairs (increase of value added tax (VAT) versus introduction of wealth tax resp. increasing VAT versus lowering expenditure on education and research, increasing VAT versus cutting state social benefits, introducing wealth tax versus cutting expenditure on education and research, introducing wealth tax versus cutting state social benefits, cutting expenditure on education and research versus cutting state social benefits, increasing VAT versus further debt, introducing wealth tax versus further debt, cutting expenditure on education and research versus further debt, cutting state social benefits versus further debt); preferred year, respectively annual period for a debt brake; assessment of the fiscal equalization system; federal state of the place of residence is recipient country or donor country in the fiscal equalization system; assessment of financial aid within the framework of the euro rescue fund; assessment of support programmes for poor regions of the European Union; sympathy scale for the parties CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and Die Linke. Demography: sex; citizenship; year of birth (categorised); highest school leaving certificate; highest professional qualification; marital status; household size; employment status; private Internet use; federal state. Additionally coded was: interview date; questionnaire evaluation; overall assessment of the survey; unique ID, household identifier and person identifier within the household.
