The Brassica family possesses includes many economically relevant species that are important for human nutrition worldwide.The Brassica genus contains a diverse range of oilseed and vegetable crops contributing that are important for much to human nutrition. B. juncea was formed by polyploidization between the diploid ancestors of B. rapa and B. nigra, followed by spontaneous chromosome doubling. Subsequent diversifying selection mainly then gave rise mainly to the vegetable and oilseed sub-variety subvarieties in B. juncea.
