Valence of social information is encoded in different subpopulations of mushroom body Kenyon cells in the honeybee brain

Experiment I: Honey bees were collected 5, 15, or 30 min following an aggressive encounter or interaction with an inanimate object. In situ hybridization for immediate early genes hr38 and egr1 was performed on fresh-frozen brain sections cut on a cryostat. Experiment II: Honey bees were collected 15 min following an aggressive, affiliative, or neutral encounter using the same assay above with the addition of a caregiving assay.
