TCEES_2023_V1 Transition to Clean Energy Enterprise Survey- Combined , TCEES_2023 Transition to clean Energy Enterprise Survey (ENT\ TCEES) Transition to Clean Energy Enterprise Survey covers six countries; Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan, and Lebanon. Quantitative data was only collected in four countries Egypt, Jordan, Morocco,and Tunisia. Qualitative data was collected in six countries; Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Sudan and Lebanon. The MENA region grapples with intensified climate challenges and mounting energy issues. Access to energy is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly for energy-importing countries in the region. This underscores the importance of transitioning to clean energy in MENA. Fortunately, the region possesses inherent comparative advantages, such as high solar radiation throughout much of the year and strong wind resources. This survey is part of the activities under ERF's newly launched project, "The Role of MSMEs in Fostering Inclusive and Equitable Economic Growth in the Context of the Clean Energy Transition in MENA," funded by IDRC. The project initiates a series of quantitative national surveys in five targeted countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon, and Tunisia. The initiative aims to gather crucial data reflecting the ongoing energy transitions in these countries. Its objective is to enhance knowledge and contribute to strategic policy initiatives, paving the way for sustainable, efficient, and equitable energy management while addressing emission mitigation and ensuring energy security and equity. This dataset combines data from four countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia. The data for each country was collected in one round and encompasses a range of company-specific details, including sector categorization, employee counts, regulatory compliance, experiences with grid-based electricity, and the extent of clean energy transition among enterprises. The data collection occurred through a comprehensive cross-sectional survey conducted between September 2023 and February 2024, focusing on how Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the four countries navigate their transition toward clean energy. All Transitions to Clean Energy in MENA Enterprises surveys employ relatively comparable designs, collecting data on enterprises across the Arab countries (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia). The harmonized design facilitates cross-country and comparative research between the four Arab countries. To complement the quantitative findings, the project team conducted qualitative surveys, including in-depth interviews with experts and relevant stakeholders, alongside focus group discussions specifically with MSMEs. These qualitative reports offer insights into local challenges, sustainable practices, and employment opportunities, with a focus on inclusivity and gender equity. The qualitative data reports for Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, and Jordan provide a focused perspective on the contributions of MSMEs to an equitable clean energy transition across the MENA region. Enterprise details such as the number of employees in the establishment, the main sector of activity, the location, the ownership structure of the establishment, and establishment’s sales and supplies. 2. The financial status of the enterprise, loans and whether access to finance is a problem, the use of internet and banking services, and recieving payments. 3. The enterprise’s experience of getting electricity from the grid, including outages and their impact, paying bills, and the use of alternative power sources such as generators and rechargeable batteries. 4. The enterprise's willingness to pay for clean energy solutions and their potential adoption. 5. Assessment of the company’s access to information about weather, backup generation technologies, tariff changes, fuel price changes and the repsonsents' views on government subsidies, responsibility for access to electricity whether it was from fossil fuels or renewable energy. National for each country The target population is the non-governmental micro, small, and medium enterprises that commenced business operations before 2023. The target population of the surveys consisted of enterprises with fewer than 100 employees that began operations before 2023. An ideal sampling frame for a probability sample should encompass all units of the target population. This includes a complete list of all active enterprises with fewer than 100 employees that started operations before 2023, along with their telephone numbers. The sampling frames used varied from country to country. Details regarding the frames and sampling methodologies employed in each country can be found in the document titled "Sampling Design and Survey Weights" in the documentation tab After excluding those phones that were not in service and firms that were not eligible, the response rates for each country are as follows: Egypt:7.8%, Jordan:19.9, Morocco: 7.6%, Tunisia: 3.5%. The weight calculations began by determining design weights that reflect the selection probabilities of the enterprises from the sampling frame.
