Cleaning symbioses are intriguing interspecific interactions where a cleaner removes mainly ectoparasites from a client. Such interactions performed by cleaner fish are essential in maintaining diverse and healthy natural fish communities and in aquaculture systems. Here, we assembled a high-quality chromosome-level genome of L. dimidiatus to pinpoint the molecular adaptations and convergent genomic features underlying the essential cleaning behaviour.
