Replication Data for: \"Equal in Private, Unequal in Public? Coeducation and Sexism in the Soviet Union\"
Despite growing interest in stratified political outcomes, political scientists have paid little attention to desegregation policies. Can coeducation persistently reduce sexism, equalizing gender roles across the private and public spheres? In 1954, the Soviet Union desegregated compulsory education throughout all urban areas. This desegregation yielded substantial effects that persisted over time and were uniform across attitudes and behaviors but not generalizable across social spheres. Differences-in-discontinuity estimates suggest that coeducation decreased sexist attitudes towards gender roles in the private sphere (household roles) but not in the public sphere (leadership roles) relative to comparable cohorts in comparable but unaffected rural areas in the Soviet Union. Our findings suggest that desegregation’s potential to reduce sexism is limited to proximate social roles affected through direct socialization, but falters in distant public roles, where change requires indirect pathways and institutional support largely absent in our context.
