We have evaluated the performance of two state-of-the-art video codecs, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Test Model (HM) and AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) through objective and subjective quality assessments. Nine source sequences were carefully selected to offer both diversity and representativeness, and their different resolution versions were encoded by both codecs towards pre-defined target bit rates. The compression efficiency and computational complexity of both codecs were first evaluated through objective quality assessment and further compared with those of another two codecs, Versatile Video Coding (VVC) Test Model (VTM) and Google’s VP9. The subjective quality of HM and AV1 compressed content was then tested by conducting psychophysical experiments. Moreover, the Dynamic Optimizer method was also employed to compare both codecs across different resolutions and wide bit rate range. The selected source sequences, compressed video content and associated subjective data have now been made available online, offering a valuable resource for compression performance evaluation and objective video quality assessment.

本研究针对两款当前顶尖的视频编解码器——高效视频编码(High Efficiency Video Coding,HEVC)测试模型(HM)与AOMedia视频1(AOMedia Video 1,AV1),通过客观质量评估与主观质量评估开展了性能评测。研究团队精心遴选了9段源视频序列,兼顾多样性与代表性,并针对这些序列的不同分辨率版本,由两款编解码器按照预设目标比特率进行编码。首先通过客观质量评估,对两款编解码器的压缩效率与计算复杂度进行评测,并进一步与另外两款编解码器——通用视频编码(Versatile Video Coding,VVC)测试模型(VTM)以及谷歌VP9(Google VP9)的相关性能展开对比。随后,通过心理物理实验,对经HM与AV1编码后的视频内容的主观质量进行测试。此外,本研究还采用动态优化器方法(Dynamic Optimizer method),在不同分辨率与宽比特率范围内对两款编解码器进行对比分析。目前,本次研究所遴选的源视频序列、编码后的视频内容以及相关主观评测数据已公开上线,可为编解码性能评估与视频客观质量评测提供宝贵的研究资源。
