Experimental warming was performed on bare (absence of vegetation) surfaces of elevated permafrost peatlands. It is expected that the warming affects the microbial community in the surface peat layers. Here we recognise shifts of the archaeal ammonia oxidizer community composition in these bare peat surfaces. This is associated higher nitrification activity in arctic N2O-emitting hotspots.
