Share of tropical deforestation worldwide 2017, by select country

China was responsible for almost a quarter of tropical deforestation associated with the international trade of forest-risk commodities in 2017. These include commodities such as soy, palm oil, beef, and cocoa. The European Union accounted for twice as much tropical deforestation for such commodities as the United States that year, at 16 percent. Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon hit a 12-year high in 2020, with almost 22,000 square kilometers of forest destroyed.
