Physiological characterisation and genome analysis of a novel bacterium from the phylum Firmicute the strain I2511, which is an acidophilic sulfur-respiring isolate obtained from sediment from an acidic stream in an abandoned copper mine in UK. Sulfidogenesis is widespread in acidic environments, however, currently, the only validated species of acidophiles that catalyse the dissimilatory reduction of zero-valent sulfur at pH < 2 are archaea. The isolate I2511 represent a of rare reports of an obligately anaerobe sulfur-reducing bacterium that grow at extremely low pH (pH 1.8).
