Archeologia urbana a lecce: gli scavi nel Nuovo Rettorato

In the period from 1996 to 2017, as part of fruitful cooperation between the Archaeological Superintendence of Puglia, Salento University and the Municipality of Lecce, intense archaeological investigations were conducted in the old town of Lecce, enabling a reading of the settlement's complex phases of transformation from the protohistoric period to the modern poch. The urban archaeology project, entitled "Lecce sotterranea" (Subterranean Lecce), with reference to the work of Cosimo De Giorgi, made it possible to bring to light architectural omplexes of the Roman city of Lupiae such as the Baths in Piazzetta Santa Chiara and the sanctuary of Isis and Serapis in the Palazzo Vernazza. Illustrations of the excavations conducted nside the large Cloister of the ex-convent housing the University's head offices show the Messapian phase and the period of Mary of Enghien.
