Strain BR3459a is an stable large-colony mucoid variant of strain BR3459 (= BR3462), a Burkholderia sp. rhizobia highly efficient in nitrogen fixation when associated with the endemic South American leguminous tree Mimosa flocculosa. Though strain BR3459a forms ineffective nodules on roots of Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) and could be a nodule cheater, it interacts synergically with Rhizobium tropici improving common bean development and grain production.
