Photograph of Lily Golden holding a tennis racket. Golden was born in Tashkent and spent her early years there, becoming a champion tennis player in Soviet Central Asia. She moved to Moscow when she was a teenager and studied African history and music. Golden's father, John, an African-American, and his wife, Bertha, emigrated from the United States to the U.S.S.R. in 1931 to avoid racial persecution.
