VPRS 14360 Rate Books

The Woodford, Newham and Rochford District Road Board was authorised to demand and receive annual rates from the owners and occupiers of dwellings in the District. This was in accordance with sections 27 and 28 of An Act for Making and Improving Roads in the Colony of Victoria 1853 (16 Vic., No.40), and subsequently, section 182 of the Local Government Act 1863 (Act No. 176). The District Road Board determined the amount of rate although a statutory limit applied. Rates were a major source of revenue for the District Road Board. The District was divided into three Ridings - East, Central, and West.Information could be recorded under the following headings:Rate number; Surname of person rated; Christian name of person rated; Name of owner of rateable property; Description and situation of rateable property; Subdivision of District; Electoral District and Division thereof in which property is situated; Gross annual value; Full net annual value; Rate at x pence in the pound; First Moiety; Paid - See Report Number; Second Moiety; Paid - See Report Number; Number on the Last Rate; Number on the Rate.
