The soil ecosystem in vineyards is vital for vine health and terroir expression. Its structure and function are regulated not only by environmental factors but also potentially by the grape varieties planted. However, research on how different wine grape varieties influence soil microbial communities and their functional profiles remains limited, especially across varying climatic and geographical backgrounds. We established a dry-wet climate gradient using the Chinese production areas of Yinchuan (arid), Beijing (transitional), and Yantai (humid) as research areas to evaluate the effects of cultivating Merlot and Chardonnay on soil physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and functional composition using metagenomic sequencing, bioinformatics, and statistical analyses.
