The use of war metaphors to describe the Covid-19 pandemic has aroused great perplexity both among scholars and journalists. The emphasis was placed on the appropriateness of using different metaphors metaphors to describe the effort to contain and eradicate the disease. However, the history of epidemics and the medical treatises related to them, which are retraced in this paper, have often seen the use of war metaphors, because wars have often accompanied or preceded plagues. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of war metaphors was essentially reserved not so much for the war that the virus wages on humans, as for the war that humans wage against the virus.
