MetadataThe variables used were the following:Distance to the next tree (cm): The distance measured by the transect, in cm, from the first tree to the next in the west direction. For each tree listed, the subsequent tree listed was the one between which the distance was measured, with the exception being tree 10 for which the distance was measured, but the next tree's data is not separately listed. For example, for tree 1, the distance from tree 1 to tree 2 was measured.DBH of adult tree: Diameter at breast height, approximately 115 cm from the ground. Measured in cm and with a tape measure. Condition: 0 was dead, 1 was living and 2 was with a large green canopy on the adult tree. This was visually determined. Methods and Meta analysisThe data was obtained on York University's Keele Campus in a woodlot by Samina Munawar and Erin O'Connor on Wednesday September 21, 2016. We started outside a woodlot and walked to the centre and then, using a random number generator, assigned different values from 1-4 for the directions north, south, east and west. Then using the generator again, we obtained a random direction, west, and then used the generator to determine a random number of steps at which we should start.From there, we began at the closest adult tree, defined as a tree we visually approximated as more than 320 cm tall. This tree we defined as tree 1 in the data and proceeded west for the following trees of random species.We measured, first, the DBH of the tree we were at, then the distance to the next tree and the DBH of that following tree. We replicated the experiment 9 times. We used a measuring tape to measure the DBH and a transect was used to measure the distance between trees.
