Ectomycorrhizal fungi have been commonly detected in nature in dead wood and plant debris of various tree species; however, their dual roles as saprotrophs and symbiotrophs are still debated. Here, we provide evidence the ectomycorrhizal fungus Piloderma croceum associated with Quercus robur L. can colonize and survive in deadwood. Piloderma croceum colonized deadwood can enter rhizosphere of Quercus robur L. and form a typical ectomycorrhizal symbiotic interaction.
