RNA sequencing and assembly of transcriptomes from twelve Papaver species reveals putative homologues of promorphinan and morphinan biosynthetic enzymes. In vitro characterization of putative homologues coupled with targeted metabolomic, genomic, and importantly structural analysis reveals key evolutionary structural features of the ubiquitous aldo-keto reductases codeinone reductase and dehydroreticuline reductase. These datasets contribute to the developing narrative of the evolution of morphinan biosynthesis in the genus Papaver.
