Ulica geroev - Street of Heroes

"Ulica geroev'' (Street of Heroes) was a widely used street name in the Soviet Union. Today, this name is used on a page of the online edition of Rossiyskaya Gazeta (RG). The RG is the official press organ of the Russian Federation. On May 17, 2024, the newspaper was placed on the sanctions list by the EU due to accusations of spreading propaganda. The "ulica geroev" section is basically a series of portraits of Russian soldiers who are said to have performed outstanding military feats during the war in Ukraine. Structured as an online gallery, the series, which is constantly growing, brings together hundreds of ``heroes''. Each item features a portrait photo of a military man in uniform in front of the Russian tricolor. Below each picture there is always a sentence describing the soldier's heroic deed. Such a sentence typically consists of a subject phrase (consisting of the military rank and the name of the soldier), a transitive verbal predicate (in the perfective aspect and in the past tense) and a direct object. The sentences deal with military achievements, either successful offensive actions to the detriment of the enemy (the Ukrainian army) or successful defensive actions to the benefit of the hero's own side (the Russian army).On October 1, 2024, a total of 961 such stories had been told. We have created a corpus of the first 400 of these minimal heroic narratives. The database partitions the sentences according to syntactic functions into `Subject', `Predicate', `Direct object', and `Other sentence parts'.
