This is the first chloroplast genome of the invasive red alga Bangia atropurpurea, retrieved by metagenome data. The species from the Bangiales family is the only freshwater species of the group, and have invaded all of the Canadian Great Lakes with exception of the Lake Superior. Moreover, B. atropurpurea is a filamentous species, which has a significant knowledge gap regarding taxonomy and classification. Since Bangiales is an ancient lineage (dating 1.6 ya), this study aims to reveal details about B. atropurpuria evolution by comparing the genome with other red algal chloroplast genomes, and inferring the phylogeny position of B. atropurpuria.
