Characterization of wastewater treatment facility communities in submerged growth reactors

A study on the potential of wastewater biofilm communities to produce value-added compounds. Communities were cultivated in submerged growth reactors and fed volatile fatty acid substrates and simple sugars. Biofilm composition was analyzed for carbohydrate compositions and compared across treatments. The results indicate mixed organic waste streams can produce valuable monomeric sugars from microbial biofilms.
