We created a simplified soil community by inoculating five different growth media with 2 g of agricultural soil. The cultures were normalized to the same optical density, pooled, pelleted and suspended in PBS. The cells were inoculated in a 96-wells plate containing different nitrogen source. Half the wells were treated with a mixture of rhizospheric miRNAs (ath-miR158a-3p, ath-miR158b, ath-miR159a, ath-miR827, and ath-miR5642b) and the other half with a mixture of scrambled miRNAs.
