Temperature profiles from XBT casts from the DUANE and ROCKAWAY from multiple Ocean Weather Station (OWS) in the North Atlantic Ocean from 14 April 1971 to 24 August 1971 (NODC Accession 7101158)

Bathythermograph data were collected from the DUANE and ROCKAWAY within a 1-mile radius of Ocean Weather Station B (5630N 05100W), C (5245N 03530W), D (4400N 04100W), E (3500N 04800W), H (3800N 07100W), J (5230N 02000W), K (4500N 01600W), and in transit. Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard and other institutions from 14 April 1971 to 24 August 1971. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html.

The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instrument. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.

UBT文件格式用于存储使用一次性温深仪（expendable bathythermograph，XBT）采集的温度-深度剖面数据。标准型XBT可获取约450米或760米深度范围内的剖面数据；若配备专用仪器，则可获取最深达1830米的测量数据。每次观测都会记录航次信息、观测位置、日期与时间。数据记录由温度-深度值对组成。与采用均匀5米间隔记录温度值的机械温深仪（Mechanical Bathythermograph，MBT）数据文件不同，XBT数据文件中的温度值对应非均匀深度，这些深度点位为记录温度曲线至可接受精度所需的最少拐点数量。但在输出阶段，用户可选择获取拐点处的原始温度值，或是将数据插值至均匀深度间隔后得到温度值。
