In NP + AdjP/AdvP constructions that exhibit asymmetrical word order between English and Chinese, such as “one step forward” corresponding to “向前 (forward) 一 (one) 步 (step)”, Chinese learners of English display asymmetrical performance when translating from English to Chinese compared to translating from Chinese to English. Based on six NP + AdjP/AdvP constructions of this type, this study conducts an empirical experiment with 140 subjects and employs statistical analysis using SPSS, GraphPad Prism, and Cursor, confirming two main findings: 1. Chinese learners of English demonstrate a significantly better performance when translating NP + AdjP/AdvP constructions from English to Chinese than from Chinese to English. 2. The adoption of chunk strategy does not mitigate this asymmetrical translation performance. A model explaining this asymmetric performance is also described, identifying the heavy reliance on semantic trial and error parsing and underutilization of syntactic trial and error parsing among Chinese learners of English as a contributing factor. These findings highlight the potential for introducing effective English learning methods to enhance translation skills for Chinese learners of English, particularly in translating from Chinese to English.
