Tree biomass and density data in the Furano tree diversity experimentData description:Tree measurement dataset used in Tatsumi and Loreau (2023). The dataset consists of tree biomass (t·m<sup>−2</sup>) and densities (trees·m<sup>−2</sup>) in monoculture and mixture stands after 1, 2, 3, 16, and 31 years of planting.Experimental design:The experimental site was established in 1987 at the tree nursery of the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest in Furano, northern Japan (43°13′09“ N; 142°22’53” E; 223 m elevation). The dataset is based on tree census in monoculture and mixture stands of <i>Betula maximowicziana</i> (Monarch birch), <i>Quercus crispula</i> (Japanese oak), and <i>Abies sachalinensis</i> (Sakhalin fir). Tree saplings ca. 35 cm in height were planted hexagonally with 50-cm spacing. The three species were planted at equal proportions the mixture. Plot sizes were 6 m × 8 m (48 m<sup>2</sup>) for monocultures and 10 m × 10 m (100 m<sup>2</sup>) for the mixture. The dataset consists of tree sizes and densities in 1988, 1989, 1990, 2003, and 2018 (= 1, 2, 3, 16, and 31 years after planting). The heights of all live trees and diameters at breast height of individuals with height ≥ 1.3 m were measured. Aboveground tree biomass was estimated using allometric equations.
