Caloric restriction (CR) is widely recognized as a beneficial dietary approach for managing various conditions, including aging, overweight, and diabetes. Nonetheless, maintaining strict long-term compliance to CR and overcome its the metabolic adaptation have proven to be significant challenges. In this study, we discovered that combining CR with magnetic fields (MFs), a straightforward physical intervention, can increase the ATP production and mitochondrial respiration in liver cells. In fact, MFs can replicate several CR benefits in <i>ob/ob</i> obese mice, such as reducing fatty liver, alleviating insulin resistance, and decreasing blood glucose levels. Furthermore, the combination of MFs with CR (MFs+CR) not only substantially improves lipid metabolism and overall liver function but also decreases fat mass while preserving lean mass. The synergistic effects of MFs+CR are likely due to the combination of reduced intake by CR, and increased output by MFs, which boost mitochondria respiration by magnetohydrodynamic processes and enhanced mitochondrial electron transfer chain activity. Our results suggest a promising new avenue for complementing or potentially replacing CR with a simple, non-invasive physical approach to address metabolic diseases like diabetes and obesity.
