Music Zones in the United States

This dataset documents 108 music zones across 27 states and 59 cities, collectively hosting 1,423 music venues. It also includes those venues in a master list as well as separate sheets by states and cities. Only areas with five music venues or more were retained. Several metrics are included including square mileage, the distance between outer venues within each music zone, the proximity of the closest venue in each music zone to the downtown area, and the geographical areas covered by the cities associated with these music zones. The measuring tools available within the online version of ArcGIS were used top that effect. The distance measurements were based on a straight-line approach for the sake of data collection efficiency. The dataset curated for this study encompasses a comprehensive range of information, including the names of the music zones, their respective cities and states, the number of zones within each state and city, and the total number of venues within each music zone. The distances between the outer venues facilitating an assessment of walkability, and the proximity of the closest venue in each music zone to the downtown center to evaluate whether a music zone might attract tourists, even if it also remains frequented by local residents. It is important to note that defining an exact geographical extent for a city's “downtown" is not possible and was approximate.
