Statue made by François Cogné (1876-1952). Inaugurated in 1932 (3 years after Clémenceau's death) by french president Edouard Herriot. Clémenceau was a strong advocate of separation of church and state, amnesty of the Communards exiled, as well as opposition to colonisation. Nicknamed Père de la Victoire ("Father of Victory") or Le Tigre ("The Tiger") because of his role in WW1. He wanted full victory over Germany after victory that cost 1 400 000 french soldiers lives. He achieved this goal through the Treaty of Versailles signed at the Paris Peace Conference (1919–1920). it was not enough for former Supreme Allied Commander Ferdinand Foch, who said : "This is not peace.
